Obituaries

Quote:
Brief, one-time notices of deaths are published in the TimesDaily and placed on our Web site at no charge. Obituaries, including funeral details and schedules, survivors and other personal information, are paid notices and may be placed by funeral directors on behalf of the family. If you wish to submit an obituary or death notice, simply email the text to us in its entirety to Obituaries@timesdaily.com. Obituaries and death notices can also be faxed to (256) 740-4717. Obituaries will be accepted only from funeral homes, or from an individual only when legal documentation is presented at our office, of that individual's Executor status over the estate of the deceased. Funeral homes which do not yet have a billing account established with TimesDaily should call Anna Gibson at 740-4737, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to arrange pre-payment or to set up an account for billing.
[Times Daily, Florence, Ala.]

Which, as it turns out, reflects a much higher standard of operation than that used on page 1.

Obituaries are news stories. Death notices are ads. Let's get that straight, Times Daily.

It's true that relatively few papers still do news obituaries. You see a lot of references to "paid obituaries," by which they mean "death notices."
