Though Aaron holds the career record with 755 home runs, Ruth's 714 continues to hold something of a mystical appeal. Maybe it's the symmetry of the numbers, the last two digits a multiple of the first.

Or maybe not, because that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard?

I assumed that the writer was joking, but apparently not.

So then, I guess, should Bonds pass the Babe, we should be equally mystified when he hits 721, 728, 735, 742 and 749. And -- uh oh -- if he breaks Aaron's mark, it'll be 756.

And mystery of mysteries, what happens if he reaches, and then stops at, 777?

Spare me.

What if he had stopped at 666?

I wouldn't have had to see him plastered all over ESPN, leading off SportsCenter with a strikeout, ever again.
