Early warning: The Philadelphia Museum of Art will present a major exhibition of Salvador Dali's work, opening in February. It's the only U.S. showing, so I wouldn't be surprised if papers at least up and down the East Coast, and those elsewhere with large arts sections, give it some coverage. Vigilance will be required to keep "Hello, Dali!" and the like out of ledes/heds.

Running a Google search on the words hello dali produces a distressing number of matches, as does an image search<p>[ November 18, 2004: Message edited by: Paul Wiggins ]</p>

Homophone, Dali = Dalai. Funny? This ain't Seinfeld here.. Somebody sent me this cartoon on my birthday many moons ago and I've been waiting for a chance to pass it on. And besides, doesn't testiness imply a certain license as to what one finds amusing?

I have an advanced, lively sense of humor, and I still don't "get" the cartoon.

Well, I shall dip deeply into my deconstructionist talent pool and fish out this analysis; (n.b. - I am disappointed that you didn't recognize the symmetry between Seinfeld, 'a show about nothing', and the philosophical point of view inferred by the cartoonist on His Holiness The Dalai Lama (who IMHO is a very cool guy indeed)) - The Dalai Lama is not-so-subtly commenting on materialism as he draws true happiness from the experience and the nothingness which his followers see is indistinguishable from infinte harmony..that's how I read it, anyway. The person who sent it to me meant well, and I factored that in, too.<p>(and the group of followers are obviously 'Playing With Dalai'.)<p>'Get' the cartoon? Isn't there some word for that, like 'Satori', where you 'get' the sound of one hand clapping? <p>Anyway, I didn't really think it was *all* that funny. <p></end of off topic digression><p>[ November 18, 2004: Message edited by: hound ]</p>

I screen-grabbed said cartoon and showed it to a guy here and asked him if he got it and if he thought it was funny, to which he responded: (long pause) "Yeah. Oh, yeah. I think it's hilarious." (long pause) "Because it's the Dalai Lama, and he's getting nothing. And I think that's what he wants, isn't it?"

I think blanp is being provocative and does get the cartoon, just as he knows perfectly well who Seinfeld is, and just as he will get this joke but not necessarily admit to it:<p>What did the zen Buddhist say to the hot dog vendor?
Make me one with everything.

But the museum is clearly thrilled to have a piece of Seinfeldiana.<p>Huh? I was bizarrely drawn in to the Post's epic treatment of a people brief, with painstaking detail even a Seinfeld diehard couldn't bear, the writer undeterred by the fact there's really no story there.

If someone has to think for 20 minutes about a birthday card that'll be in the trash within 90 seconds, it stinks.

Helicopters and planes circled the site, with one small plane carrying a banner declaring, "Goodbye Bayfront Center, Hello Dali."
The Bayfront's site will be cleared to make room for a new home for the Salvador Dali art museum, which has outgrown its nearby downtown site.

On that day in 1989 when the news wires reported the death of Salvador Dali, our editor, Richard Pearson, read it, grinned and declared, "Goodbye, Dali!"

**WARNING** DOUBLE DALI APPROACHING!!

PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Signs that Salvador Dali is about to take over Philadelphia are popping up everywhere. In the city's 30th Street Station, massive banners and posters bearing the artist's likeness adorn its walls, floors and platforms. And that's only the beginning. Slowly, the entire City of Philadelphia is being transformed into a surreal setting to promote the landmark retrospective Salvador Dali exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art from February 16 through May 15, 2005. (http://press.arrivenet.com/bus/article.php/566054.html )

Hmm. I always thought Philly was surreal. Now I know why.

...and in an uncanny juxtaposition of metarealities, the nearby Garden State is also hosting His Holiness.

http://www.dailytargum.com/news/840042.html&mkey=867421

Do I hear the opening notes of, "hello, Dali, well, hello, Dalai..."? DON'T PRETEND YOU HAVE NOT BEEN WARNED!

I imagine a few people laughed at the first "Hello, Dali" hed in about 1964. I'm sure it was used to death by 1965.

"Hello, Dalai" referring to the Dalai Lama probably was first used about 20 minutes after Gutenberg finished his press. This usage is not only stupid and cliched; it's offensive.

Of course, I preach to the choir.

If you're alluding to religious or "faith" sensibilities, I'd hope that the Dalai Lama and his followers are big and tough enough not to be shaken by a bad pun.

I like to thinks so..

Quote:
In Reel Life: Carl tells a caddie that he once carried clubs for the Dalai Lama in Tibet. "So I jump ship in Hong Kong and make my way over to Tibet, and I get on as a looper at a course over in the Himalayas. A looper, you know, a caddie, a looper, a jock. So, I tell them I'm a pro jock, and who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama, himself ... So, I'm on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one -- big hitter, the Lama -- long, into a 10,000 foot crevice, right at the base of this glacier. And do you know what the Lama says? 'Gunga galunga, gunga -- gunga galunga.'"

In Real Life: The Dalai Lama's not a golfer. But when the Tibetan leader visited the United States last year, Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura asked him if he'd ever seen "Caddyshack." He told Ventura he hadn't seen the movie. But, Ventura said, "Before he [the Dalai Lama] left, he looked at me and said, 'Gunga, gunga la-gunga'."

And here's something to look forward to:

Producer David Permut (FACE/OFF) has acquired the rights to the screenplay GOODBYE DALI, penned by Yaniv Raz and veteran actor Allan Rich, a comic look at Rich's relationship with the Spanish painter. It's based on Rich's real-life friendship with Dali, follows Rich's struggles and misadventures as a young art dealer in commissioning original works from the flamboyant and eccentric artist. The surrealist drags the young man all over Spain in a game of bait and switch.

I would imagine they are, seeing as that the current Dalai Lama is reputed to have a fine sense of humor. However, since it would be frowned upon to make puns in every hed about the pope, I would think we could offer the same courtesy to another person who is the head of a faith with millions of followers.

Exactly. Not only are all the "Hello, Dali" puns lame, they don't even work, given that in Dali's name, the stress is on the second syllable.

That's what I always thought. But here is a puzzlement. Four dictionaries spell it Dali, no accent, and give a first-syllable pronunciation. But I have an MW 10 with a biographical entry reading Dali (with acute) and offering two pronunciations! The first one is like all the others, on the first syllable. But then it says "by himself" and emphasizes the second.

Saw this as the lead to the New York Times piece on it.

A Brazen Visionary With a Surreal Self
By ROBERTA SMITH

Philadelphia — The Philadelphia Museum of Art's retrospective of the work of Salvador Dalí, the megalomaniacal Surrealist painter and every teenager's favorite artist, is a visual and psychic marathon.

Christ wept! How inept does an editorial staff have to be before they let such idiocy through. Sure. Every teenager has the same favorite artist. Just like they all dress exactly the same.

Sheesh.

Salvaged, dorky Salvador?

(And, helpfully, they even went to the trouble of adding the diacritic to let you know that the pun fails.)

Your warning comes too late!

According to LexixNexis, it's already been used in headlines over storeis about this show by the paper in Lancaster, Pa., and Washington Magazine.

Expect scores of others to follow.

OK, we're all in agreement that tired puns such as "Hello, Dali" are the devil. So why do they make it through copy desks at a wide range of newspapers with such disturbing frequency? Is it laziness, or blissful delusion that such cleverness has never before graced a headline?

I'd guess blissful delusion. Virtually every new copy editor glories in writing "Residents raise stink over waste pool" and "Rains fail to dampen revelers' spirits." Then there are the "'Tis the seasons" and the "Brrrrrrrs" ... (I exaggerate, of course. But not too much.)

Blissful delusion. You don't hit the bottom of the cliche barrel until you are required to write the Grooundhog Day story for the third year in a row. Next year you toss the shadow off to someone else or proceed to six more weeks of insanity.

Vigilance will be required to keep "Hello, Dali!" and the like out of ledes/heds.

Your warning comes too late!

According to LexixNexis, it's already been used in headlines over storeis about this show by the paper in Lancaster, Pa., and Washington Magazine.

Expect scores of others to follow.
Um, did you look at the date on that post? It was November.

No, I think the lobster telephone was the highlight. I think the very nice, drop-out-friendly pic of that work the museum sent with the press release inspired many of the "Hello, Dali" headlines popped onto stories about the exhibit.

Obviously, lots of people new to this business have started work on copy desk since this thread began. And every one of them who writes a 'Dali" hed is engaging in self-congratulation over coming up with something so funny and unique: Why, I bet no one ever thought of this!"

Early warning: Dali Meets Disney, lotsa poorly formed punning heds to soon follow.

According to this Telegraph story, in 1945 Disney Studios hired the handlebar-moustached surreallist to create an animated short feature. Since the Torygraph site is under an extended DDOS attack I have taken the liberty of excerpting the bits below (I'm sure my friends there approve.)

Quote:
Dali's art works remained in the studio archives and it was only in 2000, Roy Disney revealed at Tate Modern yesterday, that he decided to make the film that his uncle had abandoned.

The reason, he confessed, was money. Mr Disney, a vice-chairman of the Walt Disney Company, told The Daily Telegraph: "One of our attorneys rang me one day and said, 'You know, we don't actually own the art work'. He explained that in the original contract the art work would only become Disney's after the film was made.

"We reckoned Dali's work was worth $8 million to $10 million so I rang him back and asked would we own it if I made the film - which I thought I could certainly do for less than $10 million. He said yes."

Is the point that Dalai Lama is not a name and that Dalai by itself isn't meaningful so obvious as to be not worth making?

That's the kind of illiterate shit copy editors are supposed to come up with these days. And when readers object, publishers take it as proof that editors are superfluous.

I do remember how they allowed me to take a few liberties with my quirky sense of humor, even at this early stage of my career. You see, there was a photo on a page called “Focus,” I believe. It came out weekly. Three weeks in a row, I had it with the same kicker (a line above a photo caption) — kind of. One photo was about the Dalai Lama, one was about a Barbie doll collector, the third was about country music queen Dolly Parton.

And my kickers? “Hello, Dalai!” “Hello, dolly!” And “Hello, Dolly!” Now Ray liked those.

Hello, Dali. Variety reports that Antonio Banderas has signed on to star in a biopic about wax-mustachioed Spanish surrealist Salvador Dali, the innovative painter and self-promoter famous for his trippy landscapes and melting clocks. But the Hollywood trade mag also reports there are two other Dali projects in the works: Al Pacino is attached to play the artist in Dali & I: The Surreal Story, with Andrew Niccol (Gattaca, Simone) directing; and Robert Pattinson, who's in the soon-coming Twilight, plays a younger Dali in the already completed Little Ashes, about the early career of the artist and his pals. . (Variety)

What the hed lacks, the lede makes up for (emphasis mine):

Spanish police are seeking the owner of a £1.1m bronze elephant, possibly sculpted by Salvador Dali, that was stolen with a major haul of work purportedly created by the mustachioed master of the so-called paranoid-critical method.

The reason for using "possibly" and "purportedly" is explained later in the piece.

Now that reporters write "suggested heds" that often get on the Web, guess what was submitted by the reporter on a story about a canceled Dalai Lama visit possibly being rescheduled?

Why, "Hello, Dalai?"...of course!

I have to admit, it is fascinating. In a gawk-at-the-car-crash kind of way.

An argument can be made that all of his work is "late."

When Art Dallied With Poetry on 53rd Street

Sorry. False alarm.

For a second there I thought we doubled the L with the past tense.

Hello Dali

The steps are obvious: incentivize the creation of the data by making it visible, incentivize the partner community by releasing the API, and then lock down its native clients when iOS 5 appears. Or as Walt Disney once said: Hello Dali. (Techcrunch)

Hello Dali

Crank up the cliches! A broken clock is right at least once a day! As if you could kill time without injury eternity (Thoreau)! Time is making fools of us again (Dumbledore)!
Or perhaps the most relevant reference is Nancy Drew’s “The Secret of the Old Clock,” because nobody seems to know exactly how the clock tower at the intersection of Valley Road and Bellevue Avenue in Upper Montclair got so banged up, or whose responsibility it is to fix it. ...
Until someone figures it out, let’s consider it a public art installation — an homage to the famous time bender Salvador Dali.
(Baristanet)

Now, it’s your turn to say “Hello Dali!”

Taube Museum of Art Executive Director Nancy Walter and her think-tankers responsible for this annual fundraiser - known by hundreds of you as Artfest - decided to welcome back Dali with the theme "Hello, Dali."

Now in North Dakota.
