From NYT: Alex Rodriguez, a premier shortstop who is contending for the title of the best baseball player in history ...

Alex Rodriguez is contending for the title of best shortstop in history. Or rather, he was, until he got traded to the Yankees and became a third baseman to avoid offending Yankees fans who believe in such myths as clutch hitting and soul.
Nobody will be able to contend for the title of best player in baseball history until they can do the most difficult thing in baseball: Put up Hall of Fame numbers as both a pitcher and a hitter. It's so hard to master ONE side of this game, nobody should be able to master both. Only Babe Ruth has ever done that, and he will remain the best player in history until someone else does it and does it better.

Yes, but out in right field, the Babe was no Dave Winfield.

I sense sarcasm, but it's always worth repeating: No matter how nifty it looks on the highlight reels, fielding matters much, much less than either hitting or pitching.

Cy Seymour, who pitched at the turn of the last century, won 25 games in 1898 and led the league in strikeouts. He later became an outfielder. In 1905, he led the league in hitting (with a .377 average), hits and RBIs. He finished with a .303 career BA. He's not in the running for the best player in history, but offhand I can't think of anyone besides Ruth who shifted with such success from pitcher to position player (or vice versa). Anybody know of another?
Aside to blanp and other upstaters, past and present: Seymour was born in Albany.
[ February 18, 2004: Message edited by: ADKbrown ]

Interesting about Cy Seymour, ADK. Thanks. I'll have to see what Bill James says about him in his *Abstract.*
But my money is still with Ruth as the best player of all time because of his exploits as a pitcher and a hitter.
Brooks Kieschnick, who I believe was the only major leaguer doing pitching and hitting last year, has a long, long way to go to catch up with Ruth.

The excellent Rob Neyer happens to have chosen to add more ink to the endless "greatest player" debate today. He appropriately makes no mention of Alex Rodriguez, given A-Rod's youth, but the column is a good read nonetheless.
