From the New York Times on the hubbub created in the Illinois Senate race. This is the third graph of the story:
According to court depositions unsealed Monday, Ryan, a Republican, who is challenging state Sen. Barack Obama, a Democrat, for the seat being vacated by Sen. Peter G. Fitzgerald, a Republican who is retiring, took his wife to sex clubs in New York, New Orleans and Paris in the late 1990s.

This ran in the NY Times? Geez....that's a terrible sentence. And I wonder why they didn't use the traditional Mr. (or Ms.?) to describe Ryan.

Shameful. We can't be sure whose wife was taken to the sex clubs.

But I check it with the Web site. Mr. was inserted. Some sanity amid the clauses was not.
Hopefully that explanation isn't repeated in coverage of his withdrawl.

A dirty secret of the newspaper industry is that stories often are rushed to wire services and Web sites before they get a thorough edit.
Trying to keep up with competitors on the Web while staffs shrink worsens the problem.
As for what gets into print: I was off whatever day whatever ugliness was published anywhere.
[ June 26, 2004: Message edited by: Wayne Countryman ]
