The incomparable Ray Charles has died. One hopes he gets decent mention in your respective papers. His death truly saddens me.
D.

I just read Dom's post, struck my hand to my heart and said, "Oh... god!"
This is indeed very sad.

Or maybe a kick in the booty.
Sure, there was show-biz in Ray's act. But more so than Hollywood or politics (or the marriage of the two), our music connects with our emotions. And music like Ray's does the dirty work in keeping us going day after goddamn day.
"Shake it shake it shake it shake it, baby!" Now there's a great communicator.

As the wise man said, you only live but once, and when you're dead you're done, so let the good times roll.

What you say?
Not to quibble, but it was Louis Armstrong who was known for "What a Wonderful World."

It seems like a lot of the truly great die on the heels of the attention-getters.
It happened the same way with Princess Diana, then Mother Teresa. Diana did do good things, but it wasn't quite comparable.

True. Diana never hung out with the Duvaliers or ran institutions that practiced forced conversion, to my knowledge.

The jazz and blues greats of my childhood are nearly all dead now, and the world is a little less wonderful for their absence.
D.
