From the same place that says you can't end a sentence with a preposition, such as :
"Where does this schoolroom myth that the words got and gotten should never be used come from?"

Hehehe.
Bernstein, I think, has an entry about using got versus gotten that says something about a telegram being misread as "have got 10 tickets" when it meant have gotten. But I don't recall any rule against got. We certainly don't have one.

I recall reading in the NYT stylebook years ago that there was no apparent need for "gotten." Anybody know if it still says that?

Speaking of hobgoblins ...
Frosh to upperclassman during first week of classes: "Excuse me, where's the library at?"
Upperclassman: "You're in college now, boy. You should know better than to end a sentence with a preposition."
Frosh: "Excuse me. Where's the library at, asshole?"
