From the wire of record:
(05-05) 11:37 PDT NEW YORK (AP) --
Spider-Man is coming to a base near you.
Ads for "Spider-Man 2" will be placed atop bases at major league ballparks during games from June 11-13 as part of a promotion announced Wednesday.
The move is the latest push by baseball to increase its marketing to younger fans -- and make money along the way.
***Yeah, right. Baseball will sell more to young people by putting ads for movie sequels on the playing field. I don´t even think the marketing hack who thought of that believes it.***
[ May 05, 2004: Message edited by: larepublica ]

Holy living ----.
Please let this be a joke. I swear, I'll never complain about the DH rule again if someone can make this not happen.

OK, so it's not a joke.
And even Ralph Nader managed to take some time out from his work on President Bush's re-election campaign to give Bud Frankenselig an earful:
Ralph Nader, a presidential candidate and consumer advocate, criticized the deal. He wrote Tuesday to baseball commissioner Bud Selig, denouncing the decision to have ads on uniforms during the season-opening series in March between the Yankees and Tampa Bay in Tokyo.
"It's gotten beyond grotesque," Nader said. "The fans have to revolt here. Otherwise, they'll be looking at advertisements between advertisements."
In separate promotions, the bases also will feature pink ribbons Sunday as part of a Mother's Day promotion to raise breast-cancer awareness, and they will have blue ribbons on Father's Day, June 20, to raise prostate-cancer awareness.
I repeat: "Holy living ----." What's next? Spandex yellow uniforms to promote the next X-Men movie?
Hmm. The Houston Astros might go for that ...

I'm waiting for them to sell space in the on-deck circles, the coach's boxes and on top of the dugouts.

I could handle ads on top of dugouts, and probably even the on-deck circles. Anything between the lines should be off-limits, however.

According to our story, they'll be in on-deck circles, too.

It's amazing. They actually listened to the fans:
NEW YORK - Spider-Man ads on bases didn't fly with baseball fans. A day after announcing a novel promotion to put advertisements on bases next month, Major League Baseball reversed course Thursday and eliminated that part of its marketing deal for "Spider-Man 2."
"It isn't worth, frankly, having a debate about," commissioner Bud Selig said in Oakland before the Yankees-Athletics game.
"I'm a traditionalist," he said. "The problem in sports marketing, particularly in baseball, is you're always walking a very sensitive line. Nobody loves tradition and history as much as I do."
After Selig and others heard the backlash, Spider-Man got picked off base.
And frankly, in a story this silly, I think a pun like that is perfectly appropriate.

Baseball has been a rudderless ship since Fay Vincent left.
Selig is a joke as a commissioner. He sends his lackeys out Wednesday to spin the move as a way of luring kids to the game when anyone with half a brain knows it was a craven move to extract ever more dollars from the ad community.
This man who's so concerned about marketing the game to kids starts his postseason games after 8 p.m. in the East, thus ensuring they will end long after the kids are in bed.
I hope to God ads never appear on uniforms outside of Tokyo again (that was execrable), and if ads ever appear spray-painted on the outfield (or even mowed into the outfield), I may be driven away from the game altogether.

Sorry to have started this thread but looking back at this story, here is what happened:
1) The commercial product announced the arrangement and got gushy press for it (the it'll improve marketing to kids of the game b.s.). 2) Then a media firestorm erupts with a (quasi-) presidential candidate stepping to the plate on the issue, all the time the commercial product's name getting mentioned. 3) Then the parties "agree" to pull back a bit, generating even more free media coverage with the commercial product's name being mentioned.
Something tells me that we the public were bamboozled by a marketing ploy. This movie has gotten more market awareness from this "scandal" than any amount of paid advertising would have generated.
No wonder I quit on baseball in 1994.
[ May 07, 2004: Message edited by: larepublica ]

Heh. This topic kind of reminds of the movement to place ads on police vehicles to help bring in more revenue for local and state governments.
Gatekeeper
-30-
