The truth is, we can't ingest the amounts of crystal meth that reporters do. And while we can't crank out words faster than we can think, we tend to take what is written and make it make sense.

The way I heard it, it was to avoid confusion with references to lead slugs in the Linotype days. Dunno how these could get confused, but then I wasn't around in the days when copy editing notes included such stuff as "turn rule."<p>But, gad, I love newsroom jargon.
