Price of gifts listed in 'Twelve Days of Christmas' carol hits $78,100

PITTSBURGH (AP) — While the origins of the Christmas carol "The Twelve Days of Christmas" may be a mystery, one thing is certain: It's getting more costly to buy your true love all the items mentioned.

It would cost $78,100 to buy the 364 items, from a single partridge in a pear tree to the 12 drummers drumming, repeatedly on each day as the song suggests, according to the annual PNC Christmas Price Index compiled by PNC Wealth Management. The cost is up 4 percent from $75,122 last year.

What is this a measurement of, and why should I care?

Indicators accountants dreamed up to generate publicity for themselves. Whoever puts it on their front page should be shot.

This thing seems to be trotted out annually, in a demonstration of the overall lack of imagination in American journalism. Not that we lacked other examples.

Amen. Starting with Gutenberg's "Zwölf Tage Weihnachten." And it hasn't gotten a bit more interesting or relevant since.

I'd hoped this would be a one-day oddity, but no ...

Eds: CORRECTS cost of three French hens to $45, not $40, in 9thgraf.

Ha! Excellent cx.

I dodged this bullet for the business page in our news meeting. This year, anyway.

It gets worse. It’s not just about the money anymore.

True love gave to me... hefty carbon footprint
Environmental cost of song high
