Early warning: The Philadelphia Museum of Art will present a major exhibition of Salvador Dali's work, opening in February. It's the only U.S. showing, so I wouldn't be surprised if papers at least up and down the East Coast, and those elsewhere with large arts sections, give it some coverage. Vigilance will be required to keep "Hello, Dali!" and the like out of ledes/heds.

Homophone, Dali = Dalai. Funny? This ain't Seinfeld here.. Somebody sent me this cartoon on my birthday many moons ago and I've been waiting for a chance to pass it on. And besides, doesn't testiness imply a certain license as to what one finds amusing?

Well, I shall dip deeply into my deconstructionist talent pool and fish out this analysis; (n.b. - I am disappointed that you didn't recognize the symmetry between Seinfeld, 'a show about nothing', and the philosophical point of view inferred by the cartoonist on His Holiness The Dalai Lama (who IMHO is a very cool guy indeed)) - The Dalai Lama is not-so-subtly commenting on materialism as he draws true happiness from the experience and the nothingness which his followers see is indistinguishable from infinte harmony..that's how I read it, anyway. The person who sent it to me meant well, and I factored that in, too.<p>(and the group of followers are obviously 'Playing With Dalai'.)<p>'Get' the cartoon? Isn't there some word for that, like 'Satori', where you 'get' the sound of one hand clapping? <p>Anyway, I didn't really think it was *all* that funny. <p></end of off topic digression><p>[ November 18, 2004: Message edited by: hound ]</p>

**WARNING** DOUBLE DALI APPROACHING!!

PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Signs that Salvador Dali is about to take over Philadelphia are popping up everywhere. In the city's 30th Street Station, massive banners and posters bearing the artist's likeness adorn its walls, floors and platforms. And that's only the beginning. Slowly, the entire City of Philadelphia is being transformed into a surreal setting to promote the landmark retrospective Salvador Dali exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art from February 16 through May 15, 2005. (http://press.arrivenet.com/bus/article.php/566054.html )

Hmm. I always thought Philly was surreal. Now I know why.

...and in an uncanny juxtaposition of metarealities, the nearby Garden State is also hosting His Holiness.

"Hello, Dalai" referring to the Dalai Lama probably was first used about 20 minutes after Gutenberg finished his press. This usage is not only stupid and cliched; it's offensive.

I like to thinks so..

Quote:
In Reel Life: Carl tells a caddie that he once carried clubs for the Dalai Lama in Tibet. "So I jump ship in Hong Kong and make my way over to Tibet, and I get on as a looper at a course over in the Himalayas. A looper, you know, a caddie, a looper, a jock. So, I tell them I'm a pro jock, and who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama, himself ... So, I'm on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one -- big hitter, the Lama -- long, into a 10,000 foot crevice, right at the base of this glacier. And do you know what the Lama says? 'Gunga galunga, gunga -- gunga galunga.'"

In Real Life: The Dalai Lama's not a golfer. But when the Tibetan leader visited the United States last year, Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura asked him if he'd ever seen "Caddyshack." He told Ventura he hadn't seen the movie. But, Ventura said, "Before he [the Dalai Lama] left, he looked at me and said, 'Gunga, gunga la-gunga'."

Producer David Permut (FACE/OFF) has acquired the rights to the screenplay GOODBYE DALI, penned by Yaniv Raz and veteran actor Allan Rich, a comic look at Rich's relationship with the Spanish painter. It's based on Rich's real-life friendship with Dali, follows Rich's struggles and misadventures as a young art dealer in commissioning original works from the flamboyant and eccentric artist. The surrealist drags the young man all over Spain in a game of bait and switch.

I would imagine they are, seeing as that the current Dalai Lama is reputed to have a fine sense of humor. However, since it would be frowned upon to make puns in every hed about the pope, I would think we could offer the same courtesy to another person who is the head of a faith with millions of followers.

Early warning: Dali Meets Disney, lotsa poorly formed punning heds to soon follow.

According to this Telegraph story, in 1945 Disney Studios hired the handlebar-moustached surreallist to create an animated short feature. Since the Torygraph site is under an extended DDOS attack I have taken the liberty of excerpting the bits below (I'm sure my friends there approve.)

Quote:
Dali's art works remained in the studio archives and it was only in 2000, Roy Disney revealed at Tate Modern yesterday, that he decided to make the film that his uncle had abandoned.

The reason, he confessed, was money. Mr Disney, a vice-chairman of the Walt Disney Company, told The Daily Telegraph: "One of our attorneys rang me one day and said, 'You know, we don't actually own the art work'. He explained that in the original contract the art work would only become Disney's after the film was made.

"We reckoned Dali's work was worth $8 million to $10 million so I rang him back and asked would we own it if I made the film - which I thought I could certainly do for less than $10 million. He said yes."

I do remember how they allowed me to take a few liberties with my quirky sense of humor, even at this early stage of my career. You see, there was a photo on a page called “Focus,” I believe. It came out weekly. Three weeks in a row, I had it with the same kicker (a line above a photo caption) — kind of. One photo was about the Dalai Lama, one was about a Barbie doll collector, the third was about country music queen Dolly Parton.

And my kickers? “Hello, Dalai!” “Hello, dolly!” And “Hello, Dolly!” Now Ray liked those.

Thanks to my TCE training, I didn't greet her with ... well, you know.

Imagine the headlines if she heads for El Salvador. (OK, I'm going into hiding now.)

Hello, Dali. Variety reports that Antonio Banderas has signed on to star in a biopic about wax-mustachioed Spanish surrealist Salvador Dali, the innovative painter and self-promoter famous for his trippy landscapes and melting clocks. But the Hollywood trade mag also reports there are two other Dali projects in the works: Al Pacino is attached to play the artist in Dali & I: The Surreal Story, with Andrew Niccol (Gattaca, Simone) directing; and Robert Pattinson, who's in the soon-coming Twilight, plays a younger Dali in the already completed Little Ashes, about the early career of the artist and his pals. . What the hed lacks, the lede makes up for (emphasis mine):

Spanish police are seeking the owner of a £1.1m bronze elephant, possibly sculpted by Salvador Dali, that was stolen with a major haul of work purportedly created by the mustachioed master of the so-called paranoid-critical method.

The reason for using "possibly" and "purportedly" is explained later in the piece.

Hello Dali

Crank up the cliches! A broken clock is right at least once a day! As if you could kill time without injury eternity (Thoreau)! Time is making fools of us again (Dumbledore)!
Or perhaps the most relevant reference is Nancy Drew’s “The Secret of the Old Clock,” because nobody seems to know exactly how the clock tower at the intersection of Valley Road and Bellevue Avenue in Upper Montclair got so banged up, or whose responsibility it is to fix it. ...
Until someone figures it out, let’s consider it a public art installation — an homage to the famous time bender Salvador Dali.
