A reporter wrote about Stew Leonard's, a local "mega-dairy store" that's caught up in a zoning dispute. She referred to it as "renowned".
I questioned the characterization. To prove her point, she notes that it's listed in Forbes 500, and it's cited in several videotapes shown to business classes as an example of the best way to run a business (of course, disregarding the fact that the owner spent seven years in jail for tax fraud). Moreover, its wildly popular in our section of Ct.
I say that I doubt many have heard of it outside CT, (other than the folks at Forbes and those who've seen the videotapes), therefore it can't be renowned.
We can't agree, so may I disturb the TCEs for an opinion?
Have any of you heard of "Stew Leonard's"?

I have not heard of Stew Leonard's, even though I have family members who are dairy farmers. (I'm not sure the two things are related, but it sounded good in my head, so I'm adding to my response).
And the survey says...

If someone or something is renowned, why would a story need to point it out? Wouldn't it be obvious?
If it's not obvious, then the subject probably is not renowned.

Yes, I think I've seen that name before, but that certainly doesn't make it renowned, by any stretch. There are many names on the Forbes 500 list that don't mean squat to most people.
[ August 13, 2004: Message edited by: SusanV ]

You're right - I hadn't looked at that angle. Thanks for the input.
