Reporters interviewing [Tom] Cruise last weekend in Los Angeles for his new movie, "Collateral," were asked to sign an "interview consent agreement" that included a prohibition against using " `bloopers' or other types of errors or misstatements" and a stipulation that "neither Artist nor the Interview will be used or referred to in a derogatory manner." A freelance correspondent for The Boston Globe, who disclosed the agreement in her story on Wednesday, signed the form, as did another reporter contacted by the Globe. (Boston Globe)
***So. She signed the agreement, and wrote about it in her story, and the Globe still ran it.***

Despite his familiar just-friends style, Cruise isn't all that trusting himself, perhaps rightfully so. Rumors attach themselves to him about his love life, about his relationship with the Church of Scientology. He's sued for libel and won. Now reporters who talk to him are required to sign an "interview consent agreement" that requires, among other things, that the writer not misrepresent his words or use "any 'bloopers' or other types of errors or misstatements. . . . Neither Artist nor the Interview will be used or referred to in a derogatory manner."
***Note that the writer did not say she signed the agreement.***
"I tend to want to make people feel comfortable," Cruise said after offering his interviewer soda, water, whatever.
***"Whatever"?***
[ August 09, 2004: Message edited by: blanp ]

Also please note that there's nothing in the story that's even remotely interesting, even if you're a "fan" of Tom Cruise.

Also from the Outrage Desk today:
WASHINGTON - Fox News Senior Correspondent Geraldo Rivera pledged last night to make a financial gift of $100,000 to the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and UNITY Journalists of Color during NAHJ's Hall of Fame Gala.
Rivera presented NAHJ with a check for $40,000 and UNITY with a check for $10,000 at the gala and will match that total in 2005. NAHJ will name a scholarship in Rivera's name as a result of his donation.
