My AP stylebook does not give any space to the acronyms WWI and WWII, but does spell out World War I, World War II. Does that mean that those acronyms are not to be used as second reference? What's the TCE policy on this? Thanks.

We frown on using it in heds.
You can get away with it in some circumstances, but you have to make a pretty good case.

Exactly who would be confused by WWI and WWII? Seems perfectly acceptable to me -- as does the omission of the space.

Good thing it doesn't come up a lot anymore.

I think a number of people would get confused about WWI and WWII, if they were used as other than a second reference. My question was whether TCEs approved of using them at all.<p> I think the answer's been clear. Thanks to all.
