The term "gone missing" seems to be a
popular topic of conversation lately.
I'll let others sort out usage, but the discussions reminded me to say something about frequent serious misconceptions of what being "missing" means.
Foremost among considerations must be whether the person considered "missing" wants to be found. The worst example I can remember of such a misunderstanding was in the late 1980s at the Chicago Sun-Times, where a columnist often ran letters from people looking for help finding their "missing" army buddies, old girlfriends, and other people who weren't "missing" at all.
Let's remember that people have the right to be not found.
