In an AP story about two brothers and their mother, who had been kidnapped by Colombian rebel forces:
The brothers said the rebels never hit them but would sometimes torment them by depriving them of reading material or board games for long stretches or falsely promising them imminent release.
***Nothing to do for hours on end? The horror! And how could they lie to them about their release? No civil rebel would dare do such a thing!***

Be sure to check with Joan before you run any photos of Monopoly or Candy Land being snatched out of their hands.

I read that story and thought the same thing. I'm sure sitting around with no Parcheesi would get boring after three years. I think the time period was more the kicker than the treatment they received from good ole FARC, home of the gentle militants. That's dedication, though, to hold and feed hostages for so long.

/QB]

Sounds like Big Brother to me (the gameshow, not Orwell's concept). I do suspect though, that the real torment is being forced to watch Big Brother.
