Wow. <p>TOKYO (AP) -- In a bizarre end game, Bobby Fischer -- the chess world's most eccentric star -- was taken into custody after trying to fly out of Japan with an invalid passport.
Checkmate.
Wanted at home for attending a 1992 match in Yugoslavia despite international sanctions, the American former world champion had managed to stay one move ahead of the law by living abroad and being sheltered by chess devotees.

" ... stay one move ahead of the law" I thought was unobtrusive.<p>But if you're going to heap on the gratuitous references ("end game"?) at least learn how to express them.

When the extradition process gets hung up, wait for the stalemate ledes.

Read that story in proofs last night. The slot's headline was "Checkmate for fugitive chess king" Ugh.<p>I just can't believe he's 61.

The sad thing is, Fischer's capture is actually a very interesting story. Naturally, this had to be obscured by puns.

Especially when you consider how it will play into the negotiations involving the U.S. Army deserter's request for medical treatment in Japan. Moves and countermoves and ... Kehrist, now they've got me doing it.<p>[ July 17, 2004: Message edited by: JonScribe ]</p>

The Guardian piece was excellent (despite a bad headline) and the London News Review pointed to a very illuminating piece in Atlantic Monthly, written prior to his capture.<p>http://www.guardian.co.uk/international/story/0,3604,1263311,00.html<p>http://www.theatlantic.com/issues/2002/12/chun.htm

He was "taken into custody"? Wouldn't "arrested" have been better to say? "Taken into custody" is soooooo police jargon.
