I found this in some AP copy today:
Cmdr. John Meier plugs his ears as an F/A-18 fighter comes roaring out of the sky. As a pilot, Iwo Jima makes him nervous.
I wonder if Iwo Jima is as scary to Cmdr. Meier if it's just at its desk, or maybe driving. Classic example of why AP copy should be edited on the local level before going in.

And here I had thought the topic hed "When inanimate objects hold jobs" was going to be about
how others in the newsroom often refer to the people who edit stories. You know, the grumbles of "the copy desk" did this or that, not even extending the people there the courteousy of being identified beyond a collective reference to a bunch of junky furniture.

From the outer space department:
Like a bejeweled fashion model strutting the runway, Saturn has been making pretty for the cameras of teh Cassini-Huygens spacecraft....But as it flaunts its rings and beckons with its 31 moons, has this pretty planet stolen the spotlight from our neighbor? Mars had spent a year as the solar system's media darling.
Simply stunning.
Referring to the Mars rovers:
With the Martian winter bearing down, they're on reduced-energy diets to keep warm at night.
I wonder if they're on Atkins or South Beach.
