(from the Poynter-cited Pinkerton op-ed in today's (13July) Newsday, about why reporters luv luv luv Edwards..)
And the media mostly love it. Why not? Both lawyers and journalists are a high-end bunch these days - lots of income, lots of education. It's common to find reporters who have law degrees; it's even more common to find reporters who are married or related to lawyers.
What? No mention of the baronial copy-ed lifestyles?
[ July 13, 2004: Message edited by: hound ]

Matthew might be able to help here, but mightn't one of the reasons so many reporters have law degrees is that admission to the bar is not an passport to immediate riches?

It isn't, Paul. I didn't come to law school to get rich -- I came here because I wanted to try something new. I've always said that the only fields I could ever see myself working in are journalism, law and politics, and having tried (and enjoyed) one I felt a sort of wanderlust to try another. I'm happy with my decision, and unlike some of my classmates I relish reading cases and absorbing "The Law," but I have no idea what my personal finances will be like in a couple of years.
I finished my first year pretty high in my class, so I have a shot at a fat salary. But even if I get it, I'll still have mammoth loans to pay off and work twice as many hours in a week as I did as a copy editor.
And of course, most of the highly paid lawyers I know work in fields that have little to no appeal to me, such as banking, corporate or tax law. I'm more interested in criminal and public interest law, so I'm steeling myself for the possibility (nay, likelihood) of actually making less as a lawyer initially, after factoring in the loan debt and adjusting for the cost of living in New York versus Florida, than I did as a copy editor.
