An article in The Arts on Saturday [June 12] about a party at Columbia Law School to celebrate the publication of a book by David Gilbert, an imprisoned former member of the Weather Underground, referred imprecisely to Cesar Chavez and Timothy Leary. While they are heroes of many leftists, they were not members of the Weather Underground. (New York Times)
***Nice to get it straight, but where in hell would anyone get the idea that Cesar Chavez, a labor leader, and Timothy Leary, a nut case, were in the Weather Underground?***

Well, here's the original: Time has not been kind to the reputation of the Weather Underground. Much of the rhetoric seems stale now, and many of the old heroes, like Cesar Chavez and Timothy Leary, are on their way to being demoted or forgotten.
I don't think I would have been confused. Perhaps people thought they were being demoted in the Underground?

You're right. The correction overstates the problem.

Actually any reference to Tim being part of an underground , or underground, entirely misses part of his lasting legacy - I refer, of course, to the launch.
[ July 11, 2004: Message edited by: hound ]
