Jack Beal, Optimistic New Realist Painter, Dies at 82
Jack Beal, whose pensive nudes, densely detailed still lifes and earnest public murals depicting ancient myths and modern life helped define the New Realism of the 1960s and ’70s, a school of figurative painting notable for being unfashionable at the time, died on Aug. 29 in Oneonta, N.Y. He was 82.

Murray Gershenz, Record Store Owner and Character Actor, Dies at 91
Mr. Gershenz (accent on the second syllable), who was 91 when he died on Aug. 28 in Hollywood, went on to become a familiar and much-loved face in films and on television.

David S. Landes, Historian and Author, Is Dead at 89
Richard Landes said that his father died on Aug. 17 in Haverford, Pa., where he lived, and that his health had failed since his wife, the former Sonia Tarnopol, died in April.

Manson Whitlock, Typewriter Repairman, Dies at 96
From the early 1930s until shortly before his death last month at 96, Mr. Whitlock, at his shop in New Haven, cared for the instruments, acoustic and electric, on which that music was played.
