Some j-schools, incredibly, required students to memorize the stylebook for some unfathomable reason. |

Never required, and always discouraged, memorization when I taught editing. I did test 'em on their ability to look up answers to stylebook questions, hoping it would instill the habit of keeping the book nearby at all times. |

Quizzes were always open-book. That was the point -- to know how to look stuff up. |
