You haven't sprung for a fresh shirttail of type since 1856? You're fourth-gen Hearst, and Hearst Corp., having exiled you to the Capital District, isn't happy about handing out big bucks to its monopoly outpost? There's always hectography, if the cost of gelatin isn't too dear. Bonus: Hubris applies to San Simeon's lordlings, as it does to all lesser mortals. As always, readers don't give a damn about pressroom juju unless and until something goes wrong.

Quote:
Publisher George R. Hearst III, great-grandson of William Randolph Hearst, the newspaper titan known as The Chief, had spent more than 20 years off and on while juggling competing priorities trying to accomplish what four previous publishers could not: deliver a new, multi-million dollar printing press to the Times Union, founded in 1856.

There had been numerous fits and starts while Hearst drove and flew thousands of miles around the country and across the Atlantic to scout new and used presses. The 2008 recession scuttled at the last minute an approved $55 million capital project that included construction of a large new building to house a new press at the Colonie newspaper plant.

After two decades spent chasing what had come to seem like a mirage, a new press was within reach and Hearst was hungry to close the deal.
