For all those people out there who learned all the journalism terminology and procedure they ever wanted to learn, and no more, from an old George Reeves show:[*] An editorial, usually unsigned, is the expression of the opinion of the publication. The expression of the opinion of an individual [sometimes accompanied by a disclaimer from the publication] is called an opinion, or an opinion column, or an op-ed column, or some variant thereof, but it isn't an "editorial." Bonus: There's no shame in checking the calendar, but there is shame when you don't check it. Quote: I have great respect and appreciation for the New York Times, and a fair portion of both for the customary insights of foodie/journalist, Mark Bittman, as well. But I have just about none of either for the combination of the two represented in an editorial by Mr. Bittman in the Times last Thursday (Feb. 27, 2013) declaring sugar toxic. [Huffington Post][*] And if you never watched Perry White replate Page 1 by picking up the phone and dictating a new headline to the pressroom, why, you haven't lived. |
