The New Yorker, which is published in New York, should know better, when the writer is the capable but British-born John Cassidy. Table is one of those words with opposite meanings on the opposite sides of the Atlantic. In British parliamentary practice, it means to put forth a proposal; in American lawmaking, it means postponing action, usually with a view to burying an unwanted proposal.
