Heavily subbed... What does it mean when a writer says a piece should be "heavily subbed"?

Copy edited mercilessly. (Copy editors are called subeditors not just in Australasia but also in many other places throughout the world.)

A request for a heavy subbing can often be a request for complete rewrite, depending on the interoffice relationships of those involved.
