(From our library staff based on a report in the the Independent Financial Review)
Readership of The Independent Financial Review rose from 30,000 to 34,000, a 13.3% lift, between June 2006 and June 2007. The latest Nielsen readership survey ending June 2007 for newspapers and magazines show Fairfax Media print publications are read by 2.7 million people or 84.6% of New Zealanders aged 15 years plus, an increase of 60,000 readers year on year. The domestic online audience for Fairfax'sStuff.co.nz for the month of July 2007 averaged 821,704 unique browsers, a growth of 52.1% year-on-year, which outstrips the newspaper and magazine website category

New Zealand has fairly high newspaper circulations because geographic isolation comes into play. Other factors that come into play here are press improvements and living in interesting tomes, to use the Chinese curse. In the case of the independent financial review, its sale to Fairfax allows that paper to supply more of the hard information its target market likes. The Fairfax acquisition also allows more effective national distribution of the paper freeing up money that can go to editorial needs.
