Question: does one 'whine' in Oz? or 'whinge'? (not that the Australians are prone to doing a lot of either...)

Not an Aussie, but I learned the word "whinge" from one. I like it better than "whine".

whinge SAY: winj
verb (i) 1. to complain; whine.
noun 2. a complaint. [northern form of Old English hwinsian to whine]
whingeing Pom SAY: .winjing 'pom
noun 1. derogatory a British immigrant, thought to be always criticising and complaining about life in Australia.

But note whine is also used as in the following classic joke:
Q: How can you tell the plane at the arrival is the flight from London?
A: The engines are off but the whining continues.

whine SAY: wuyn
verb (i) 1. to utter a nasal, complaining cry or sound, as from uneasiness, discontent, peevishness, etc. 2. to complain in a feeble, plaintive way. 3. to emit a high-pitched, monotonous sound, as of machinery, etc.
verb (t) 4. to utter with a whine.
noun 5. a whining utterance, sound, or tone. 6. a feeble, peevish complaint. [Middle English; Old English hwīnan, cognate with Icelandic hvīna whiz]

For the pronunciation police among you the phonetics guide used in our in-house version of the Macquarie Dctionary uses a different style than the one that public uses.
