Staff at the Sydney Morning Herald and Sun Herald walked off the job this afternoon over Fairfax Media's announcement it will cut 35 jobs through a voluntary redundancy program and introduce a seven day rostering system for production staff across the papers.

The Australian Industrial Relations Commission has issued a return to work order for striking Fairfax staff in Sydney. The order instructs Fairfax employees to return to work by 1pm today, or at the normal start time of their shift, whichever is later. Fairfax Alliance members are meeting at Darling Park, in front of the IBM Building, on Sussex St in the city, prior to 1pm, where Fairfax management will address members.

"Seven day rostering"? Please tell me that doesn't mean what I think it does!

What sort of authority does this Australian Industrial Relations Commission have? Is it part of the national government?

Does Australian law prohibit or limit striking in general?

Australian law disallows striking during the term of an award or enterprise agreement. The Industrial Relations Commission is the umpire here because the parties have set their agreement in a federal rather than a state framework. At this stage , the focus is to get the parties to talk rather than to impose any penalties. I couldn't possibly comment on what I think about colleagues participating in illegal strikes. The law does not allow me to.

It means your rostered 7.6 (don't ask me why .6 it's too arcane) ordinary working hours can be over a four-day or five-day working week. Because the Sunday paper and monday to friday paper SNH had separate production streams SMH copy editors knew in the past they would never be rostered on on a Saturday.
