Fairfax Media today launches an online newspaper in Queensland in a bid to break the monopoly of Rupert Murdoch's News Limited.

New paper for Brisbane

BRISBANE'S first new newspaper in 25 years made its debut today with the launch of mX.
The News Limited title, which is aimed at 18- to 35-year-old city commuters, was first launched in Melbourne in 2001 and kicked off in Sydney in 2005.

The first Brisbane edition of the 32-page, full-colour tabloid - which was distributed around the city's CBD this afternoon - had an initial print run of 40,000 copies.

Paul, I'm curious about whether this is like tabs that have sprung up in big U.S. cities. Here they tend to be free, have stories that are short even by tab standards, and aim for the young. (Not all have all of these attributes.)
