Tonight from AAP

Potential Aussie citizens should know ``bring a plate'' does not mean the hosts are short of crockery, and BYO means they are expected to take alcohol.
Immigrants could also be quizzed on whether they know to beg pardon after burping in public, that asking about someone's salary is not polite and spitting on the street is a big no-no.

*Let's see if any one lets the nonsensical reporting in the first two pars of that immigration story go through.

I hope this is a column mocking the idea, because it certainly takes a trivial look at an extremely serious subject.

If it's not intentionally mocking, I wonder if the writer would call for the deportation of citizens who would fail the test.

Either way, the intro stinks.

...and that "this is a crock" describes metaphorical crockery and, more importantly, its contents.

Migrants face tougher test
to become new Australians

UNDER a strengthening
of immigration laws
proposed yesterday,
would-be Aussies
would need to prove
they understood Australian
history, national
symbols, culture and
the democratic system,
as well as English before
being granted citizenship.
Compassion, respect,
equality and the principle
of a ‘‘fair go’’ are
among Australia’s
‘‘common values’’ likely
to be tested.

........ Parliamentary Secretary
for Immigration
Andrew Robb released
a government discussion
paper .......
Mr Robb also announced
new immigrants
would have to
wait four years for
Australian citizenship
under laws expected to
come into effect next
year.
Current permanent
residents would only
have to meet the existing
two-year residential
requirement if they
apply within three
years of new laws being
passed.

...... Migrants would
also be able to sit the
exam again if they
failed the first time.
Mr Robb said he believed
the level of English
competency should
be set at a point where
a person could hold a
job, talk to workmates,
read safety signs and
fill out forms.
