WALLABIES coach Eddie Jones believes there were ``newspaper penalties'' in last night's Test against South Africa with the Australian scrum now targeted by officials after weeks of jibes by opposition coach Jake White.

I've heard of people whacking their dog on the nose with a rolled-up newspaper for soiling the carpet.

I'm guessing the Wallabies are human athletes who'd be unfazed by a rap on the proboscis with the morning edition.

This reminds me (loosely) of a Simpsons episode where we learn why the seniors at the Springfield Retirement Home aren't allowed to read newspapers:

Newspapers angry up the blood.

"It's a concern to me when I speak to a referee and he says 'I've read about it in the papers' which means that it's in his consciousness," Jones said.

"We've all used it (the media) at various times to get an advantage but you'd expect referees to be above that."
