Too many people said things like Australia has endless skies and
exquisite sunsets, so let's take time
to appreciate the wonders of our
country
on January 26.
And on that Australia Day too many reporters took down every word, typed it up and filed it to editors. Worse some of it got through.

Eeeeeww. Pardon my ignorance, but was the 26th a holiday or something?

Yep, the trouble is the reporters are trying too hard to produce deathless prose to go with a special occasion but the result is mere pap; worse, it's the sort of mindless guff that cheapens the whole thing. My old news editor would be spinning in his grave. He always used to say of special occasions like Australia Day: If you don't have the right words to fit the occasion, shut up and let the picture do the work.

Europe had its romantic movements as a precursor of nationalism Alas, Australia followed suit. Here's one of the most famous, in which Dorothea McKellar writes about why Australia
Compare and contrast New Zealand's James K Baxter with Australia's Dorothea McKellar

Baxter sheds more light, less heat. Papers should do the same, IMHO.

I remember discovering McKellar's poem in high school; I liked it a lot. But then, I also memorized Walter de la Mare's "Silver" in ninth or tenth grade.

I will have to hunt down more of Baxter's work.
