I don't bother reading the polls. If I want to know what "Joe and Jane Average" are thinking, I ask my mother. She always calls it right.
For this election, I asked her about a month ago, then told two of our senior editors what she said.
As usual, she was spot on with both the what and the why.
Today, both editors have come over to ask me to congratulate my mother on her accuracy and one suggested we should employ her as a pundit next time.

One thing I was taught about polls that I do think stacks up: even if the snapshot in time figures are inaccurate, the trends over say 18 months or two years are useful indicators.
