Does "grant" mean something different in Australia? I was reading an article about home sales in Australia, and it seems that the government offers grants for first-time buyers. Is this what we would call a tax credit in the United States?

It's a hand-out, regardless of whether or not the recipient pays any tax at all. Fair? Sensible? No comment. Disclosure of interest. I'm entitled to a grant of about $20,000 on a $138,000 first-home purchase. Does not alter one's view.
