LOS ANGELES - The Dodgers became the fifth team in modern major league history to win a game in which they didn't get a hit, defeating the Angels 1-0 on Saturday night.

The Angels' Jered Weaver pitched six hitless innings before he was lifted for a pinch-hitter, then Jose Arredondo pitched the next two innings.

Since the Dodgers didn't have to bat in the ninth, the game doesn't qualify as a no-hitter. It was only the fifth such game since 1900, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

I don't care if it's an American League team playing in a National League park, who the hell pinch hits for a pitcher who's throwing a no-hitter? (The strategy obviously didn't work.) And couldn't AP afford another paragraph to tell us how the Dodgers scored their run?

Chone Figgins pinch-hit for him in the seventh with two outs and a runner on second, but grounded out.

You'd think it was against the rules to have a pitcher pitch a complete game anymore, so we probably won't see many one-pitcher no-hitters until bullpen staffs are bought out and laid off.

Weaver (7-8) was victimized by his own fielding error with one out in the fifth inning that allowed Matt Kemp to reach first.

Kemp's spinning squibber rolled to the right of the mound and Weaver rushed toward first base to grab the ball, but bobbled it.
...

Kemp stole second and continued to third on catcher Jeff Mathis' throwing error, then scored on Blake DeWitt's sacrifice fly.

this was an egregious mistake by the official scorer. the ball was a little swinging bunt tapped toward first base. weaver came flying over to make the play, but he missed a glove-only pickup.

the only problem is that the rulebook clearly states that if the hitter is safe after putting the ball in such a place that it's a difficult play for the fielder, he is to be credited with a hit.

one of ESPN's talking heads was bleating about how scorers want the first hit to be "a clean base hit" so that a potential no-hitter isn't broken up by a questionable play, but that strikes me as BS. the official scorer's job is to record the events that take place on the field. this was a base hit by the rulebook; whether the angels won or lost a no-hitter shouldn't even be a topic for conversation.
