Cleveland's Jacobs Field is now "Progressive Field," thanks to a deal cut with the auto-insurance company.

Can you see Yankee Stadium, Camden Yards or Fenway Park being renamed for a corporate sponsor in your lifetime? Or any lifetime?

Let's see what happens with Wrigley.

Yeah, it'd be a shame if somebody put some brand name all over it.

In the case of Jacobs/Progressive Field, it is a big shame, and one that's not going over too well here in Indians territory.

Oh well. The baseball world has survived Tiger Stadium being replaced with Comerica Park, and Comiskey Park becoming U.S. Cellular Field. Even in Cleveland, the Cavaliers' Gund Arena recently became (*shudder*) Quicken Loans Arena.

Anger over renaming the Jake may subside, especially if the Indians continue winning and they re-sign C.C. Sabathia, but I still can't imagine anyone saying, "Let's go to Progressive Field!" And "the Prog" just isn't catchy.

Yeah, I know, before Tribune grabbed the stadium, the gum family owned it. But Cubs fans are already whining in fear after hearing that if Zell doesn't sell the team, he might look for a sponsor.

"Fear"

It tends to work better if the name of the company is a person's name, like Wrigley or Busch, instead of something like Genericorp.

Doesn't the Tribune staff own the Cubs now? I thought I read about banners to that effect. Can they trade players like a real-life fantasy team? Or is it the Cubs players who now own the team? How does it work that a billionaire buys a newspaper without spending the money, and the employees end up with the debt?

The minor league stadium in "my" town is named after the state senator who secured funds for it. He's still in office, too..

Top that..
