One would think the world has come to an end based on the local media's reaction to postseason awards.
So Ryan Braun posted the highest slugging percentage ever by a rookie and wins rookie of the year. That doesn't mean writers hated Troy Tulowitzki, who on the merits of his fine season came in a very close second.
And Clint Hurdle takes third in manager of the year, losing to two managers who actually led their teams to the division titles. Not bad for a guy who could have (should have?) been fired during the nine-game losing streak around the All-Star break.
Memo to local media: Crying about these things makes you look even more provincial.

I think there's a perception-vs.-reality thing going on in a couple of the awards — the AL Cy Young Award and the NL Rookie Of The Year Award.

In the AL Cy Young voting, C.C. Sabathia, who had a virtually identical season to Josh Beckett, won handily. That doesn't sit well with folks whose memories are still fresh of a postseason in which Beckett sparkled and Sabathia tanked. So that makes it easy to forget that the voting took place before the playoffs started and has nothing to do with postseason performance.

Same with the NL Rookie Of The Year race. Tulowitzki didn't have Braun's offensive numbers, but played much better defense. But nobody cares about defense. But people are now wondering if Tulowitzki shouldn't have won — not because of his defense, but because he shone on the national stage during the Rockies' mediagenic run to the World Series.

Then again, reality scored a big win over perception when Derek Jeter came nowhere close to winning a Gold Glove at shortstop this year ....

"and it's hit on the ground, past a diving Jeter into the outfield..."

Give it a rest, people. We get it. Not fans of Derek Jeter. Think he's overrated.

Do a search at TCE on his name vs. "pepsi cans" and see which gets more hits.
