Wow. By that reasoning, Alex Rodriguez's failure to hit a home run in more than 90 percent of his at-bats this season is another example of "futility."

As is the failure of any pitcher to hurl a perfect game in the postseason---well, except for that Larsen fellow, but that was before even I was born.
