While I gave up following pro sports a long time ago, I was a fanatical baseball fan as a kid. I remember the Phillies collapse in '64 like it was yesterday (lost 10 straight and blew 6.5-game lead with 12 to play).

As a longtime hater of New York teams, I am taking great pleasure in all this.

One can only hope that New York media culture quickly follows suit.

An even more satisfying storyline: Pedro Martinez returns ... and the team immediately goes to shit.

Pedro actually pitched OK. Here's my take on how things went south:

1) Clubhouse chemistry. Paul LoDuca and Lastings Milledge are despised by their teammates. Jose Valentin and Damion Easley were great clubhouse guys but both got hurt and were replaced at 2B by Luis Castillo, who wasn't comfortable batting second and whose Gold Glove turned to iron.

2) Billy Wagner was OK, but the rest of the bullpen was absolutely brutal.

3) It's time for Glavine to ride off into the sunset and reappear for the 2013 Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

4) The Phillies got into the Mets' heads. Seemed like every time they played them, they would play tight and wind up getting swept.

5) No home field advantage. They were 41-40 at home, and 47-34 on the road. And the fans were, understandably, not too happy during that last homestand. Citi Field can't be built soon enough.

And to those who want Willie Randolph to be more like Billy Martin, do you really want a drunken, paranoid psychopath as your manager? I'm pretty sure he'll be back, but if the wheels look like they're coming off the bus, they won't be afraid to pull the trigger sooner, rather than later.

I'm friendly with local boy Aaron "Garbage Time" Sele ... but I'm going to wait at least a week to call and get the scoop. Any sooner might be dangerous.

The hatred of New York teams I developed as a child is deepened by the fact that I read the New York tabloids almost every day (don't tell Phillip). There is an entitlement mentality in New York sports. They think they "should" be in the playoffs every year.

Ha, ha. Screw the Mets.

Cubs fans waited 38 years for that karmic payback.

I once read a book about the 1969 pennant race that said that the Cubs' collapse could be laid at the feet of a series of astonishing lineup-selection and in-game managerial blunders by Leo Durocher.

So how are the Cubs — down 2-0 in their series as of this writing — rewarding their fans?
