Mark Teixiera was dealt from Texas to Atlanta for three prospects. John Schuerholz is a Hall of Fame general manager, but he sure whiffed here. Teixiera isn't the bopper people think he is and he's overvalued and overpaid to boot. Jarrod Saltalamacchia, meanwhile, is a first-rate catching prospect — and will be a great, cheap young player for 3-4 years, as he's nowhere near being eligible for abritration for a long time. The other players acquired from the Braves have good upside, too.

Eric Gagne probably won't be what Boston hopes he is, either. Which Keith Foulke will he be?

Castillo traded from the Twins. Granted, they're flailing, and he's not the youngest second baseman out there, but to trade away a (this year) competent hitter and fielder when you're trying for the last time this year to put together a run...well, I guess I'm not surprised.

It was a huge blow to the team's morale. Terry Ryan has a tin ear when it comes to such things.

Texiera is having an off year--for him. He fell from popular favor in a hurry, considering his age and past seasons. Missed about 30 games with an injury this season. Only 13 HRs and 49 RBIs so far. Still, his on-base % is .397 and he's a good fielder. The trade puts him back in the city where he played college ball. He's under contract through next year.
Atlanta gave up excellent prospects to get him. Why? Because they want to win THIS year. Andruw Jones, Chipper Jones and John Smoltz all are far past their primes. The front office obviously is satisfied with McCann, their young catcher--people rave about Saltalamacchia the way they did Teixiera before he was signed. First base has been their weakness for years.

Why would the Red Sox get Gagne, who's obviously past his prime and coming off serious injuries? Because they want to win THIS year.
The Yankees can expect better pitching in the second half, especially with Hughes returning this week. What Schilling can do is unknown--the end might be near for him. Taveras can't be counted on. Piniero was a disappointment.
Varitek, Ramirez are getting old. Will Lowell be back? When could the Sox expect to have a better chance to win it all than this season? The division will be stronger next year.
The Sox don't need Gagne to close--he'll be their third-best reliever. Brendan Donnelly, who's in his mid 30s, is set for Tommy John surgery. If Gagne flops, they'll write him off.
Boston got one valuable season out of Foulke by burning him out. It's a cruel sport. Rich teams have an advantage. Players get paid huge amounts but sometimes are physically abused.

Castillo isn't the player he once was, but he's still pretty good and popular with his teammates. This is the trade that surprised me. Perhaps the Twins figure they'll get him back next season, but it looks as if they've given up on this season.

You called it, Wayne. Did you see today that Johan "The Franchise" Santana is questioning his desire to stay in Minnesota?

My fear all year was that the Mariners would reach this impasse with Ichiro. Thank God they extended him for five years and $90 million before they want on that seven-game losing streak that could well have knocked them out of wild-card contention.

I was just coming to post about Santana. You don't piss your Cy-Young-winning starting pitcher off. You just don't.

Strib blog is hinting that releasing Cirillo on waivers is part of a bigger plan. What plan is that, Ryan? Angling for yet another teenage pitching prospect in the middle of a pennant race? If you're giving up, just say so.
