Not that baseball managers should be mistaken for Safire, Kilpatrick or even McIntyre, but this is pretty cringeworthy:

Quote:
“If we’re solid on the defensive end, Colon don’t get no win today,” Rangers manager Ron Washington said. “He got away. I thought we handled Colon very well. ... We made him work, we just didn’t get the job done to get a win.”

NEW YORK (AP) — The Yankees hope to announce next week whether Carl Pavano will need surgery.

Pavano hasn’t pitched since April 9 and might have a reconstructive elbow operation, which would sideline him for the remainder of this season and most, if not all, of next year.

He has been examined by four doctors — the Yankees’ team physician and three outside specialists.

“We’ve gotten one of three of the diagnosis’s in writing back,” Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Friday. “He’s waiting for us to tell him what we want him to do based on the diagnosis’s.”

How does one pronounce an apostrophe? In other words, unless the comment was written, it seems to me that the reporter, an editor, or both share Brian Cashman's grammatical challenges. If he was speaking, the nonword he was trying to pronounce would be "diagnosises"--a poorly formed plural, not a poorly formed possessive.

On the other hand, too bad for Cashman he's not the field manager. If he were, at least we could write off his misstatements as the result of spending too much time in the sun.
