Wow, I think the Yankees are being given too much credit here. That starting pitching is THIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIN. Or is it universally assumed that George will go out and buy what the team needs? Carl Pavano, Opening Day Starter? And Josh Phelps at first base? |

Carl Pavano, Opening Day Starter? And Josh Phelps at first base? Pitching is a problem, but they have an awesome offense. NYT reported that many Yankees regard Robinson Cano as their best hitter. And yet he's batting 8th because the lineup is so potent. |

My worthless guess is that the young teams in Cleveland, Chicago, Detroit (if they can get over the World Series debacle) and maybe even Minnesota could be the class of the American League. I expect Texas to display talent but lack consistency, as usual. I expect the fountains beyond Kansas City's outfield to be kinda nice. I have little feel for the West, and bad feelings about the East. Maybe this is Toronto's year to humiliate the Yankees and Red Sox. As for the NL: The travel would be brutal, but the Pirates might petition to switch to the West. Mets and Phillies should be tough, and maybe the Braves will mature. How good is Milwaukee? What's up with LaRussa and the Cards? If the big stories of the first half turn out to be waiting for Clemens to pick a team, Bonds to break the HR record and Steinbrenner to find a new way to jerk Torre around, I might skip this season. But I hope to see Pujols and Howard excel, rookies come out of nowhere, and Boston's new pitcher team up with Schilling. And perhaps we could pass the hat and buy the Cubs. |

Also, yes, the Yanks' starting rotation has a lot of question marks, but the bullpen is stocked with five power arms--Bruney, Vizcaino, Farnsworth, Proctor and Rivera. That's a pretty tough combination for opposing managers to deal with, even if they all throw from the right side. All neutralize lefties just as easily as they do righties. The Red Sox' rotation has as many question marks as the Yankees', if not more (Will Josh Beckett challenge Bert Blyleven's record for homers surrendered? Will Fat Curt make it through the season? Who's the No. 5 starter, and please don't make me laugh by saying Julian Tavarez?), and the Red Sox' bullpen in front of Papelbon is very weak. There's your postseson-missing difference between the two beasts in the East. |

Interesting how so many of us (including me) are predicting big things for the Indians, given their huge flameout last year amid rumors Eric Wedge had lost the clubhouse. It's hard to bet against that offense, though, even if it gets only halfway decent starting pitching to support it. |
