Post subject:  Cy Wang

Quote:
The groundout, of course, is Chien-Ming Wang’s specialty, and his ability to produce grounders almost at will has given him an outside chance at the Cy Young award. At minimum, he has emerged as an ace at a time when Mike Mussina has been down with a right groin injury. -- NYT

Yes, Wang is having a good year, but if he deserves the Cy it won't be because he induces a lot of ground balls; it will be because he doesn't let in many runs. Right now he is ninth in the league in that department. For him to deserve the CY, he will have to have a super September.

Well, his winning the Cy probably depends on how many home starts he has left, given the disparity between his home and road records. It's not even close; he is 10-2 with a 2.76 at home and 6-3 with a 4.88 on the road.

He should start again on the 9th in Baltimore, the 14th at home against the Devil Rays, the 19th in Toronto, the 24th in Tampa Bay and the 29th at home against Toronto.

If he goes 3-2 in those five starts, that would make him 19-7, very good in the superior American League. But Johan Santana and Roy Halladay are also having superb seasons.

The great thing about Wang is that he is only 26, and he is a Yankee. It's impossible to imagine newly empowered Brian Cashman dealing Wang for anything less than, say, a Dontrelle Willis, and the knowledge that the franchise's future is in a baseball-savvy person's hands is reassuring.

It's been intimated, I think by White Sox announcer Darrin Jackson, that the Yankees water the dirt in front of the plate extra when Wang's pitching, helping to keep those grounders in the infield and accounting for some of his extreme home-field advantage. Damn Yankees.
