He also said that amphetamines were called "greenies" and "beans" and were used widely because "they work." -- Jason Grimsley, in NYT

No they don't:

Quote:
Grimsley, 38, made his major league debut with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1989 and has also pitched for six other teams in his 15-year career. He has a record of 42-58 with a 4.77 earned run average. Grimsley was a member of the Yankee teams that won World Series titles in 1999 and 2000.

Grimsley managed to stay in the majors. If in fact he was using all that time, it's entirely possible he wouldn't even have managed that without them.

It's all relative, and while there is a huge disparity of talent between the best major leaguer and the worst, it's still not as big as the disparity between major leaguer and not. If you want a major league salary, anything that keeps you in the bigs "works."

Matthew speaks truth. It's easy to forget that the spectrum of professional and aspiring baseball players doesn't run from all-stars to journeyman major-leaguers. It runs all the way down to guys who need steroids or uppers just to make a minor-league team.

To put it another way, only a few dozen people in the country can maintain a 4.77 ERA in the majors over 15 years and pitch on two World Series winners. If you're almost that good and uppers or 'roids will get you the rest of the way there ...

I'm sure Grimsley is a great athlete compared with the average joe or even the above-average joe. But he's not great by major-league standards. Unless the numbers lie.

We're all agreed on that. It's just that "they work" doesn't have anything to do with greatness.
