During the Mantle years, did the Yankees have brothers who played for the team? |

Apparently so. Barely. If by "Mantle years" you mean 1960 and if by "played" you mean at least one game. Billy Shantz and Bobby Shantz both played for the Yankees in 1960. In Billy's case, that amounted to recording one putout (as catcher) and no at-bats. He never appeared in the majors again. His older brother Bobby, a pitcher, had 42 appearances for the Yankees that season, going 5-4 with a 2.79 ERA. I have to wonder whether Billy was brought in to catch his brother for one out as some sort of stunt, and then sent off to the minors forever. Thanks, Matthew. I'd been reminded of a conversation I had with a drunken older woman in Tucson two months ago. She insisted she was a big Yankees fan as a kid and that there were "those brothers" who played for the Yankees. She was quite in the bag. Kept sending her husband up to the bar for "just one more" drink. My favorite line of the night came when she said: "Baseball players are the type that if you hit 'em in the head" -- long pause -- "they'll hit you in the head." |

Incidentally, the elder Shantz gave up three of the runs in the Yankees 10-9 loss to Pittsburgh in Game 7 of the World Series that year (the Mazeroski game). His catcher, however, was neither Billly nor Berra but Blanchard. |
