Couldn't be because, on the brink of his momentous "achievement" of displacing Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron in the record books, he didn't want to subject himself to the stricter international drug-testing standards that will be in effect for the World Baseball Classic and risk having his stellar reputation besmirched, could it?

Nahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

It's too bad. I was hoping his knee would give out in the WBC and his career would be over.

The man is truly worthy of nothing but scorn. It will be one of the most pathetic days in baseball history if he passes Hank Aaron. Will anyone but the most willfully blind Giants fan be pleased?

And how about his recent statement that batting second in the order "doesn't work for me" and therefore will not happen?

Between Bonds' decision to usurp his manager's right to fill out a lineup card and Alfonso Soriano's avowed refusal to shift from second base to the outfield in Washington, we could see a dangerous precedent at work here — players trying to pre-emptively decide field management and strategy.

We see a little of this in Seattle, where it's been long understood that Ichiro would not be receptive to any attempt to shift him from right field to center. He was also reportedly hostile to batting third in the order last year.

How long till Boras or other agents start dictating field strategy in contracts?

It's good to get that out of our system every once in a while.
