They can't get anyone to take their money.

I'll say this, though: If the proposed four-team megadeal involving Tejada, Ramirez, Baez, Clement, Benson and Lugo works out, I think it will be one of those rare deals in which every team involved benefits.

The Orioles might be as well off if they can get Jeff Conine back and/or keep B.J. Surhoff, if he'll stay.

Baltimore TV stations were mocking the Burnitz deal last week, noting that, considering how lousy Sosa was, looking to the Cubs for another aging, overpriced outfielder wasn't the answer.

But the team needs answers. The Yankees should be better, the Red Sox should be half-decent (although they're capable of self-destruction), and the Blue Jays might end up in first.

The malaise from the drawn-out twilight of the Ripken years lingers over Camden Yards. The front office remains a mess. Billionaire owner/attorney Peter Angelos will spend next season trying to influence state and congressional elections while worrying about losing some of the fortune he won in court from the tobacco industry.

Let's see if this big proposed trade occurs.
