I'm neither pro- nor anti-Dylan, but even I could appreciate the strangeness of his waxing poetic—or at least in verse—about the late, great Catfish Hunter when Hunter was in his prime, in 1975 (Dylan was in his prime then too, from what I understand). A friend sent me this in an e-mail the other day.

I have not heard the tune; has anyone here?

It's notable too how prescient Dylan was at predicting Hunter's Hall of Fame enshrinement 12 years before it happened.

You can find the tune on his first bootleg series, Vol. 1-3.

"Catfish" is an outtake from the "Desire" sessions. Most of those songs (including "Catfish," I'm pretty sure) were co-written by Jacques Levy, who was the main lyricist.

It's a good song. An homage to Delta blues.

I never realized how big a sports fan Dylan was; then again, I should have known, given his classic "Story of Hurricane" -- a must-listen for those whose knowledge of Dylan begins with "Like a Rolling Stone" and ends with "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35"
