The Rocket's Dread Glare: A Novel in 9 Innings

By Julia Keller
Chapter One
The city was as restless as a toddler in an art museum.
Fidgeting under a chalk-white sky, the city somehow made it through the day, made it through the waiting … waiting … waiting for the moment when it would all begin, when the fireworks would punch bright holes in the night sky and the players would glide onto the field as if they were coasting about an inch above the ground, and when time itself would be subsumed by an endless agitation called The Present.
Until that moment, though, there was this: the waiting.
The waiting to see if the White Sox would do what a whole city was ravenous for them to do. Or if sthe Astros—and, by the way, who ever heard of a moniker like that outside of a "Jetsons" character?—would sneak in and snatch the first one away. But if they did do that, they'd better not get used to it.

I note that Julia is credited as the Trib's "cultural critic." I gather this means her job is to write about anything important that happens in Chicago using bizarre narration.

Given that Roger Clemens only lasted two innings, I also would guess Julia picked this headline out days ago and refused to part with it even though, as her story notes, he was very quickly a non-factor in the game. At least, I hope that hed didn't come from a copy editor.

In conclusion, I wish I could follow instructions.

Sigh. If only there could have been a Game 7 ...
